Ocelot Windscreens

Ocelot Windscreens: A long needed solution for canister topped stoves!

The Ocelot Windscreen was designed for people who use mugs along with canister topped stoves. These are great, lightweight cooking options as the stoves are compact and can weigh less than an ounce. As marvelous as these devices are, the one area that they lack in is wind protection. All stoves (alcohol, Esbit, isobutane or white gas) all need some sort of protection from the wind. Without a windscreen, fuel efficiency can drop like a rock as well as significantly increase the time to heat up water. There have been a few attempts to solve this problem including the Optimus Crux Clip on windscreen and the Giga Peak windscreen plate. To date, there hasn’t been a completely satisfying solution. Surrounding the cooking system (canister & stove) with a partial windscreen can cause your canister to overheat: there are cases where the canisters have exploded in these situations.

The Ocelot Family of Windscreen

All stoves benefit from using a windscreen. Canister topped stoves in particular are notorious for being sensitive to breezes. Some stoves like the BRS 3000t have difficulties in light winds above 2 mph. You can use a windscreen with a canister topped stove if you leave plenty of space around the canister to prevent it from overheating. In the past, this has resulted in bulky and heavy windscreens. The Ocelot System was meant to change that paradigm by creating a localized, compact windscreen that could be packed inside your mug/pot.

  • Ocelot Original: for mugs up to 750 ml mugs (up to 4.2” in diameter)
  • Ocelot Mini: for 400-600 ml mugs (up to 3.8” in diameter)
  • Ocelot 6: for pots as large as 1300 ml (up to 6” in diameter)

The Ocelot Original consists of a full circle, yet partial height windscreen. Ocelot is designed to protect the burner head from the wind while allowing ample space to keep the isobutane canister cool and provide an ample supply of fresh air to your stove. The Ocelot Windscreen consists of a Stainless-Steel windscreen along with a stove specific burner plate that matches your stove to our windscreen. We currently support 12 different canister topped stoves (see the full list below). Like our other cooking gear, the Ocelot Windscreen has been designed to nest inside your mug: like the Snow Peak trek 700. Of course, smaller mugs can be used; however, the specific burner plate may not nest inside your mug.

Ocelot Standard: Stove Compatability

The Ocelot Mini is designed smaller mugs (400-600ml). Again, these are full circle, yet partial height windscreens. Ocelot is designed to protect the burner head from the wind while allowing ample space to keep the isobutane canister cool as provide an ample supply of fresh air to your stove. This kit allows you to nest the windscreen inside your mug. These work with a very limited number of stoves: BRS 3000t, Soto WindMaster 4 Flex, Snow Peak LiteMax and the Kovea SupaLite.

Ocelot Mini: Stove Compatability

Ocelot 6 is a partial windscreen designed for pots up to 6 inches in diameter (~150 mm). In general, that means that the Ocelot 6 will be compatible with pots up to 1.3 liters in volume. These windscreens are a partial wrap: they encircle the pot just under a 180-degree wrap. Additionally, the windscreens are partial in height: they protect the burner from the wind. This design requires the users to orient the cooking system so that the windscreen faces into the wind. The windscreen is made of stainless steel, weighs about 1 oz (30 g) and can be stored inside a 750 ml mug. We currently support the Ocelot 6 with the MSR Pocket Rocket stoves (Deluxe and 2) as well as the Soto WindMaster 4 Flex.  The Ocelot 6: Universal attaches to the fuel canister and can be used with most canister topped stoves.

Ocelot Performance in the Wind

Here are wind tunnel test results from the PocketRcket Deluxe.  The test was run at ambient as weill as with and without the Ocelot windscreen.  In all test, 2 cups of 70 F water was used and heated until boiling (210 F at our elevation).  At 3.5 mph wind, the Ocleot Windscreen saved 5 grams of fuel per boil.  In all cases, the stoves were turned to 1/3 power, increasing the power, lowers the fuel efficiency.

In all cases, the stoves were turned to 1/3 power, increasing the power, lowers the fuel efficiency.
